Common Questions Before Moving Day

Preparing properly before your movers arrive can make your move faster, safer, and more affordable. Below are answers to common questions about packing, furniture protection, wardrobe boxes, mattress covers, furniture disassembly, moving time, and what Space Movers can and cannot move.

These moving day FAQs are written for customers booking local moving services in Calgary and nearby areas. They explain what to expect before our movers arrive, how to prepare your belongings, and how to avoid delays on moving day.

Moving Day FAQs for Space Movers Calgary

Do you provide free moving boxes?

No, Space Movers does not generally provide complimentary moving boxes. If you book our packing service, packing supplies can be provided at a reasonable additional cost. For most moves, we recommend having your boxes packed, sealed, and labeled before moving day so our movers can work efficiently.

Do you offer wardrobe boxes free of charge?

Yes. We provide wardrobe boxes free of charge during your move. Wardrobe boxes are tall moving boxes with a metal hanging bar, making them ideal for suits, dresses, jackets, and other hanging clothes. They can also be used for soft, lightweight items when needed.

How many wardrobe boxes can I have?

We include 2 wardrobe boxes with a 26-foot moving truck and 1 wardrobe box with a 20-foot moving truck. This setup works best for safe truck loading and available space. Additional wardrobe boxes are not available on request.

Do I need a TV box for my move?

No, a TV box is not required. In most cases, TVs are best protected with multiple layers of thick moving blankets. This removes empty space around the TV and allows us to secure it tightly in the truck, which actually reduces the risk of damage from pressure or shifting items.

Should I empty my dresser drawers before the movers arrive?

It depends on the furniture. We strongly recommend emptying drawers if the item is heavy, older, weakly built, going up or down stairs, or difficult to carry safely. Emptying drawers reduces weight, protects the furniture, and helps prevent damage during the move.

What should I do with art pictures and picture frames?

Small pictures and picture frames should be packed safely into boxes before moving day. We recommend wrapping each frame with packing paper and bubble wrap, then placing them upright inside a sturdy box. Do not overpack the box, and clearly label it as Fragile - Pictures/Art/Glass.

Large pictures, mirrors, artwork, and oversized frames can be left for the movers. Our movers will assess each item and protect it with moving blankets, stretch wrap, or other padding as needed before loading it into the truck.

For valuable, sentimental, antique, or glass-heavy artwork, we recommend using extra protection or specialty picture/mirror boxes whenever possible. If an item is extremely fragile or high-value, please let us know before the move so we can plan the safest way to handle it.

Do your movers disassemble and reassemble furniture?

Yes. Furniture Disassembly and Reassembly are included in the hourly moving rate. If you choose to disassemble furniture yourself, please keep all screws, bolts, and small parts in a labeled bag and attach it securely to the furniture. If an item is taken apart before we arrive, we cannot always guarantee reassembly.

Can furniture be moved without taking it apart?

Sometimes, yes. However, furniture should be disassembled when it is safer for the item, the home, or the movers. Our moving crew will assess each piece on moving day and decide whether disassembly is needed to prevent damage and move everything securely.

Do you wrap and protect furniture during the move?

Yes. Furniture protection is a standard part of our moving service. We use moving blankets, stretch wrap, and proper handling techniques depending on the item. Sofas, tables, dressers, TV, Art, Glass, Marble, etc., are protected as needed before moving.

How do you protect mattresses during a move?

We recommend using a proper plastic mattress cover. Mattress covers are available for purchase from Space Movers, or you can provide your own before moving day. A mattress bag is the best way to protect your mattress from dirt, moisture, and damage while it is being moved.

Will movers place furniture where I want it in my new home?

Yes. Our movers will place your furniture and boxes in the rooms you request. Space Movers also position furniture pieces where you want before the job is done. This helps make your move-in easier and reduces the amount of rearranging you need to do later.

What if I am loading a POD, storage container, or rental truck myself?

If you’re loading a POD or rental truck yourself, we strongly recommend using thick moving blankets, straps, and proper securing materials. Please note that we can’t take responsibility for any damage during transit if we’re not the ones handling and driving the load.

When does moving time start and end (Calgary local moving services)?

The clock starts when the movers arrive at the pickup location. Time ends once everything is delivered, assembled if needed, and placed in the correct location at the destination. Delays outside our control, such as elevator problems, blocked access, or waiting for keys, are billed at the regular hourly rate.

Do movers take breaks during the job?

Yes. Moving is physically demanding, so movers may take short breaks or lunch (after pick up). Customers are not charged for break time. Breaks are taken off the clock.

Are there items Space Movers does not move?

Yes. We generally do not move grand pianos, hot tubs, pool tables, vending machines, heavy gun safes, gas tanks, flammable materials, chemicals, open liquids, paint, or items over 550 lbs.

We also do not move greasy, oily, or dirty items that could damage or soil the moving truck, moving blankets, or other customers’ belongings. This includes items such as commercial kitchen appliances, restaurant equipment, or anything with heavy grease buildup.

Some exceptions may apply depending on the job, access, weight, condition of the item, and safety requirements.

What items should I move myself?

We recommend keeping valuables, personal documents, keys, small electronics, fragile sentimental items, plants, medications, and anything you need right away with you personally. It is also a good idea to pack a small essentials bag with clothing, toiletries, bedding, chargers, and daily-use items for the first few days after your move.

Can I help the movers carry items?

No. For safety and insurance reasons, customers and third parties cannot assist with carrying or moving items during the job. If a customer or another person becomes involved in the move, Space Movers cannot take responsibility for damage or injuries that may occur.

Can I ride in the moving truck with the movers?

No. Customers cannot ride in the moving truck, either in the cab or cargo area. Space Movers is not licensed to transport passengers, and this is also part of our internal safety policy.

Do you mount TVs or install appliances?

No. Space Movers does not provide TV mounting, appliance installation, plumbing, gas connections, or electrical hookup services. We recommend hiring a qualified technician for TV mounting and appliance installation.

Can Space Movers refuse service?

Yes. Space Movers may refuse service without refund in certain situations, including aggressive behavior, harassment, discrimination, unsafe conditions, or a job that was significantly misrepresented at the time of booking. We aim to keep every move safe, respectful, and fair for both customers and movers.

Can I pack items in plastic totes or reusable bags?

Yes, plastic bins and totes are fine as long as they are not overpacked with heavy or fragile items. Soft shopping bags are not ideal because they cannot be stacked securely in the moving truck. For the safest and fastest move, we recommend sturdy, uniform boxes that are sealed and clearly labeled.
